The time of year is among us, when the days are shorter, and it begins to get dark much earlier. Most of us arrive home after a long day of work to a dark driveway entryway, leaving little to no visibility of where we are walking. This, combined with winter weather (snow, ice, freezing temperatures) can cause dangerous walking conditions, which can lead to injury. If you find yourself in this situation and want answers, continue reading to see how this can easily be fixed.
There are a few simple solutions getting light where you need it most during the dark winter days. Outdoor lighting can be installed in a couple of different ways to get the desired results you are seeking. Here are a few great options:
1. Flood lights on an sensor in the driveway. These lights will come on as you pull in the driveway, lighting up the area, making ice more visible, and give you a sense of security when pulling in.
2. Walkway lighting. Walkway lighting can be installed as photocell (comes on when the sun goes down, off when it comes up) or even on a timer. Both are great options and will light your walkway, giving you great visibility.
3. Porch lighting & interior lighting. All lighting can be set up on a timer. A porch light that comes on at say, 5:30 when you arrive home, will illuminate the area that you are entering which will give you an added sense of security when arriving home during the dark night hours.
All of these things can be done as well on existing lighting you have.
All lighting must be installed by a licensed electrician. DO NOT attempt to install lighting on your own, because electrical wiring is not for the faint of heart, and it can cause serious injury if not done properly.
